It's Monday night, just a few more days before the fat man in the red suit comes around. Every day they put up more Christmas decorations in the park. More lights, more music, and more shoppers. Laurie took a bunch more pictures tonight and will put them up soon. We found out that Christmas Eve is the big night! At midnight the fireworks go off the people shout and sing and toast with what ever drink they have in their hand. We were told on good authority that it's OK to have an open bottle on the street. I'll keep ours under cover.

A slow Sunday...and Restaurant Observations, living in Lima ...

Laurie is a little under the weather, so I'm giving her some "Poor Baby's" and seeing to her needs. In between I've heated up the left-over roasted chicken and am having some lunch.

Restaurant Observations...
I've noticed  some similarities between Costa Rica restaurants and here in Lima. Like serving rice and french fries with your meal. Or when your order a dish that comes either with Carne or Pollo, and you order it with Carne...it arrives with Pollo. Even the dish I ordered. Thin beef steak with rice and fried bananas. I thought that would be safe, as I was not in the mood for french fries. It came with more fries then rice! They can't help themselves. This seems to happen more in the small "hole-in the-wall" places. 
This is not a neg. for Lima, I enjoy the food here and the life style. The weather is great this time of year. I've been told about the winter in Lima when it stays overcast all the time and you never see the sun. I think I can live with that. The temp avg in the winter is within my acceptance range. 
Will have to improve my Spanish. ..."Vamos a ver"

It seems no one lives there but the turtles...

It's the little things that make life interesting...

When your apartment is on the 11th floor and you find a maintenance sign at the elevator door it makes one pause. WE ARE TRAPPED !!! This has never happened before.? How long will the elevator by out-of-order? We can walk down I think. But what about the walk up 11 flights of stairs!


I've never lived on the 11th floor before and I have no pacience for this. Laurie on the other hand does not seem concerned. If we just wait a while the elevator will be operating again she says.

In my mind I'm thinking “It's a plot! “they” have shut down the elevator and taken over the apartment bldg! I walk down to 10...there is no sign on the elevator door. I go down one more floor...the same. I then walk back up to 11 and my knees are feeling the strain. We try to call down to the lobby but the phone doesn't work! Laurie is still calm. By this time I'm ready to pound on the elevator door, when I see a young man coming up the stairs with a work light strung over his shoulder. He walks over the elevator door and I ask him ,in my poor Spanish, how long before the work is done? Then without a word he pushes the down button and the elevator door slides open.

How nice to have a chicken place next door...

Well, I finally got to try Pardos Chicken right next to our apartment bldg. It's funny how after a large delicious lunch and you're stuffed you can get hungry again a few hours later. But that's what happened and jumping at the opportunity I said “Hon” why don't I just go to the chicken place and pick up something for later if we get hungry again? The picture tells the rest of the story. OK so it wasn't one the great Peruvian dishes that have been pictured so far in our blog, I only had to walk 50 ft or so to the restaurant.

Fly Like a Bird

Gene says: Laurie wanted me to take a ride in one of those things! I'm not sure if they would take me. I'm better at watching from the ground others that want to float around over the ocean.
Laurie says: I want him to do it because I can't! It looks fabulous, but I have this thing with heights and it would be physically impossible for me to do it. Anyhow, if I did do it, I would have a heart attach before I got in the air. All I can think of is that during the civil war in Spain, in order to save ammunicion, they lined up the opposition and forced them to jump off an amazingly high rocky cliff.

So what do you do if you find a really cool apartment in a perfect neighborhood with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms plus maid's quarters which would be a perfect artist's studio and the owner refuses to rent it for less than 12 months?

After lunch today we walked from Miraflores over to Barranco, the area known as an artist enclave. It was a nice walk - an hour and a half or so, I think. We like this area. When we were here last year, we went there by combi, and thought it was a bit of a trip. Now that we've walked it, without the convoluted route and numerous stops of the combi, we realize it is conveniently close to Miraflores.
