Hi, I remember these from Brasil. There, we called them pasteis, and they were small and half-circular, usually with some sort of meat in them. From wikipedia: In Brazil there are two dishes that are similar to what are called empanadas in the rest of Latin America. Pastéis are fried turnovers filled with seasoned ground meat, shredded chicken, cheese, seasoned ground shrimp, hearts of palm, and various other fillings. Empadas are pies made with a rich buttery crust. A large empada often can serve as a main course, whereas small ones called empadinhas are often consumed as snacks. Common fillings for empadas and empadinhas include shredded chicken, hearts of palm, and shrimp. The fillings for empadas and empadinhas often contain olives and tomato sauce.
DD de Peru! I love it! And by the way, we have Dunkin Donuts here, too. I haven't tried them yet. Costa Rica Seco? Verdad? Increible! Que tengan buen dia!

Our Apartment
for October 2010
How it Got Started
October 2008: "The flight to Buenos Aires has a layover in Lima, Peru," he says. "Peru. How interesting. So we should stop off in Peru for a few weeks, yes?" "Sounds right to me. November 12th OK with you?" December 2009: So that's how the whole Peru experience started out in 2008. We fell in love with the place and here we are back in Lima for a 2-month stay in 2009-2010. After that, who knows? Maybe this will become our next home. September 2010: And here we are on our way back for the 3rd time. We've packed up and left Costa Rica (after 8 years) and are looking forward to finding our next permanent home - in the great city of Lima, Peru!
OK. So it's $2.48 Now
Gene just pointed out to me that "most Peruvians miss the $2 lunch, too. So I recalculated it, based on today's exchange rate. And anyhow, we're back, so we're not missing it any more. We're enjoying it!
While we were in the states, I ordered some of my own fridge magnet creations with photos of fish in the markets (see above). I am happy to say that they are awesome. Now I just need a fridge to put them on!

I look forward to sampling the Peruvian versions.
Your photos of the wide selection of empanadas strikes me in a way as what one might first take for the Dunkin' Donuts of Perú.
But I don't think DD delivers.
Cheers!
