Why Didn't I Think of That?

Andina reports that more and more US students are studying in Peru and other Latin American countries. The news agency doesn't say much about the reasons for this increase except for the vague statement "to see what’s done in that region and know about ecotourism." It would be interesting to know if this is an indication of a broader world outlook among US young people. Whatever the reasons, what an incredible experience to go to a different country for college. When meeting young people who take off and travel the world over long periods of time, I am frequently struck by the realization that their lifestyles feel normal to them because they see their "personal world" as including all of it, rather than the small part occupied by their birth country.

I really liked your thoughts about what you gleaned from the article. A thumbs up to you!

Laurie (and Gene),
Why don't you try to meet some of those students? Have them over for coffee (or more), see what they are all about.

Larry: Have met many of these long-term travelers - mostly Couch Surfers - when we were in Costa Rica - which is where I got the impression that their "personal world" is a larger place than other people's. It's an interesting concept to me. The world that they are part of is very large. I don't realize how large ours is until I talk with someone who has always stayed in one place. It turns out that they see my world as strange and most of them think I am crazy.

This is a very interesting topic. "How large is the world." A little bit like the story of two blind people trying to describe an Elephant. one of then was holding it's trunk and the other holding a leg.
The news media keeps telling us that the world is getting smaller and smaller. And it is! At one time it took weeks or months to travel from one place to another. Now the Space Shuttle can circle the earth in about 3hours.
If money was no object, one could live just about any place they desire and travel to any place they desire in a matter of hours.
Perhaps some day someone who has always stayed on one planet, will think going to other planets as strange and most of them will think of it as crazy.

Someone said that if you're rich, you can live anywhere. And if you're poor, you can live anywhere. It is the "middle class" who cannot be mobile because they need to hang on to all their "stuff."
